What is Protein?

Protein is an important macronutrient that is involved in nearly all bodily functions and processes.  It is an essential dietary nutrient for healthy living and it plays a key role in exercise recovery.

Protein can be an important part of your diet in order to achieve your weight loss goal.

Four main areas that have direct effects on weight loss: 

  • Keeps you full longer
  • Helps preserve lean body mass
  • Uses more energy to break down compared to carbohydrates or fats (thermic effect of food)
  • Can be more difficult to store as body fat

To ensure you are eating sufficient protein on a daily basis, consider the following:

  • Eat daily, 6 portions for women and up to 8 portions for men as per the GH’s plan
  • Weigh or estimate and track your daily protein intake
  • Eat some protein at all meals
  • Aim to include both animal and plant based proteins
  • Choose high quality protein sources
  • Consume well-balanced meals
